Dexter Moses

Saxophonist | Composer | Educator

The Journey

Dexter Moses, originally from Richmond, VA, now based in Raleigh-Durham NC, is a young rising saxophonist, composer, and educator. His introduction to jazz began at the age of 12 through the RVA Richmond Youth Jazz Guild, led by pianist Ashby Anderson. Through the program, he got the opportunity to play at local festivals and events and perform for notable figures such as Wynton Marsalis and Bill Clinton at the Richmond Forum.

While attending Appomattox Regional Governor's School in Petersburg, VA he was in the top jazz ensemble led by educator James Carver. There, he also earned two Outstanding Musicianship Awards at the Berklee High School Jazz Festival (2015, 2017) while privately studying under Berklee College of Music and North Carolina Central University alum, James "Saxsmo" Gates.

Moses is an alum of NCCU where he studied with Dr. Ira Wiggins, Dr. Brian Horton, and artist-in-residence Branford Marsalis. While obtaining a Bachelors in Jazz Studies and Masters in Jazz Composition & Arranging, he has performed and/or recorded with top artists such as Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis & the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, Joey Calderazzo, Nnenna Freelon, Lenora Zenzalai Helm, Antonio Hart, James “Saxsmo” Gates, and many more.

As a part of his artist mission, Moses' self-released debut album, New Perspective (2024), musically expresses the human experience while staying true to the jazz tradition. Currently, he serves as a saxophone instructor at Russell Lacy Music, NCCU, and Duke University.

Dexter plays every note with energy and passion. He possesses enthusiasm that is infectious to everyone listening to his brilliant tone.

Billy Williams, Drums (Warren Wolf, Larry Willis, etc.)

Dexter Moses is a fantastic young musician. A deep player that understands the importance of studying the history of the music, while not being bound by it. I'm excited to see where he takes the music and where the music takes him. He's the future!

Dr. Ira Wiggins, Former Director of Jazz Studies at NCCU (30+ years)

Dexter is a stellar musician who is wise beyond his years. Not only does he have an appreciation of the history of jazz, but it comes through in his performance on various levels. Additionally, he possesses the discipline, work ethic and thirst for knowledge which fosters continual creativity and growth as a first rate artist.

Thomas Taylor, Percussion and Jazz Studies Professor at NCCU

Dexter Moses should be someone you keep an eye and ear out for on the local, national, and international music scene...His consistent growth with tone, melodic ideas, and musical patience belies his actual age.  His commitment to swing sounds like he was born with a horn.

Richmond Jazz Society, Inc.

We placed Dexter in a professional big band setting and watched his skill progress...Soon his leadership ability in the small ensemble setting also became apparent...Dexter exhibits an eagerness to learn from his teachers and seasoned performers. Conversely, he shares his knowledge generously with his bandmates and contemporaries.
